Published on August 6, 2019, the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Chess Club has taken a commanding lead in the 2019 Kenya Premier Chess League, with a 63-point advantage after winning all their league matches at KCB Sports Club over the weekend.
The 2018 runner-up, KCB Chess Club, defeated Gymkhana 3.5-1.5 in their first match, with Philip Singe drawing and Ben Nguku losing to Samuel Kimani and Lawrence Kagambi of Gymkhana respectively.
Acting captain Joseph Methu led the team to a 5-0 victory over Limuru Chess Club, with Ricky Sang, Singe Njoroge, and Gwen Jumba also winning their matches.
With this win, KCB Chess Club extended their unbeaten run in the league to 21 matches, creating a 15-point gap between them and Anchor Chess Club, who have three games in hand.
Speaking to the media, Methu expressed the team's focus on winning the title, saying, 'We played very well today despite missing some of our top players; Harold Wanyama and captain Magana. This shows we are a very serious side.'
