Kenya's 99-year land leases have been a contentious issue, with counties fighting to take back land held by foreigners. The leases, which were converted from 999-year leases in 2010, will continue until 2109.
According to the National Land Commission (NLC), the 99-year leases kicked off in 2010, following the promulgation of the new constitution. This means that landowners who had been granted leases in the 1920s under the 999-year rule will continue to use the land until 2109.
Former NLC chair Muhammad Swazuri explained that the NLC's position was that the new 99-year leasehold kicked off in 2010.
