The Kenyan karate team has converged at the Kasarani Stadium for a two-week training camp ahead of the All Africa Games in Morocco, which they will attend from August 19.
Initially, 48 karateka were selected for the provisional squad, but this number has been narrowed down to 10, with 6 men and 4 women.
Among the selected team members are Phanice Opiyo, who finished fourth in the 2015 All Africa Games, and David Kimani, the lone karateka in the Katta category.
Head coach John Owiti expressed confidence in the team's readiness for the competition, despite being allocated fewer slots than other countries.
“We had so many players in the provisional squad and it has not been easy to narrow it down to 10. In 2015 we missed medals narrowly and this year our goal is to bag medals, we want to be champions,” Owiti explained of their ambitions.
The team will depart for Rabat, Morocco immediately after the Judo and Taekwondo competitions are wrapped up.
