Published on August 5, 2019, Equity Bank has named Gerald Warui as the new Managing Director of Equity Bank Kenya to replace Polycarp Igathe.

Warui, a 21-year veteran of the lender, has been appointed as the Director, Operations and Customer Service at Equity Bank Kenya, a position he held until his appointment as MD.

With over 30 years of experience in the banking industry, Warui has held various leadership positions within the Group, including operations, customer service, and HR.

Warui holds an Executive Master of Business Administration degree from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and is also a Certified Public Accountant CPA (K), and a graduate of Advanced Management Program offered by IESE Business School, Barcelona, Spain.

Equity Bank's Board has chosen Warui as its new leader for Equity Bank Kenya, citing the lender's commitment to developing strong, broad-based management talent.

Polycarp Igathe, who was MD for eight months, has returned to Vivo Energy as its Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Africa, barely a year after joining the lender.

“The Board congratulates Mr. Warui on his appointment. The Board thanks Mr. Igathe for his dedicated and impactful service to Equity and wishes him well in his new role with one of the Equity’s most valued partners and look forward to deepening the existing relationship across the continent,” Equity Bank said in a statement.
