On August 5, 2019, a group of Community Health Volunteers from Mathare, Nairobi, gathered at Chatter hall to demand payment of their arrears from the Nairobi County government.
Priscilla Esther, a Community Health Volunteer from Mathare Kosovo Unit, spoke on behalf of the group, stating that they have volunteered for over ten years without receiving any payment.
According to Esther, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko had promised them a monthly stipend of Ksh. 8,000, but this promise has never been fulfilled. Instead, only a few were given Ksh. 3,000, which is far from the promised amount.
The Community Health Volunteers provide essential primary health care and promotional services to the community, but the lack of payment has become a significant challenge for them.
