On July 27, 2019, Kibra lost a beloved leader, MP Ken Okoth, who succumbed to cancer at Nairobi Hospital. His legacy lives on through the community he served, and a group of graffiti artists from 8town Crew wanted to pay tribute to his memory.
Founded by Ish Artlives, the crew includes Madd Lion, Irish, and Aluoch, all passionate about using their art to make a difference. When Ish Artlives learned of Okoth's passing, he knew he had to do something special to honor him.
"Ken was very supportive of his people here in Kibra and especially the youth, so we thought the best way to honour him was to have his graffiti done here in Kibra," Ish Artlives said.
The crew scouted for the perfect location and found a space at the DC stage in Kibra. With the help of Detail 7, another talented graffiti artist, they worked tirelessly to bring their vision to life.
"I love Detail 7's work and I just thought of working with him in this mural. When I shared the idea with him, he loved it," Ish Artlives told Nairobi News on August 5, 2019.
"I liked Ken Okoth and when Ish Artlives shared the idea I immediately said yes. Ken was a great man and honouring him was an honor," Detail 7 added.
After five hours of hard work, the face of the smiling late MP emerged on a wall in the heart of Kibra, where Okoth spent the better part of his life. The mural was done on a wall at the DC stage, where it will be visible to thousands of people who pass by or board the matatu at the stage.
