Manchester United has made a major splash in the transfer market by signing England defender Harry Maguire from Leicester City for a record £80m fee.

Maguire, 25, becomes the second most expensive Premier League player, behind only Paul Pogba, who joined United from Juventus in 2016 for £89m.

He is also the second most expensive British player, after Wales winger Gareth Bale, who joined Real Madrid from Tottenham for £85m in 2013.

Maguire signed a six-year deal with United and is expected to make his debut in the Premier League opener against Chelsea at Old Trafford on August 11.

"When Manchester United come knocking on your door, it is an incredible opportunity," Maguire said.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hailed Maguire as one of the best centre-backs in the game, praising his reading of the game and strong presence on the pitch.

Maguire becomes the third summer signing for United, following Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace and Daniel James from Swansea City.
