As of August 5, 2019, Mombasa County government is moving forward with plans to construct a new international stadium, aiming to address the shortage of recreational facilities and sporting activities for the youth.
The dilapidated Mombasa County Stadium, over 50 years old, is set to be completely demolished and replaced with a new facility that meets international standards, including those set by CAF and Fifa.
According to Frere Town Member of County Assembly (MCA) Charles Kitula, the county has allocated Sh1.2 billion for the project, with contractors expected to visit the site soon to begin construction.
Kitula assured residents that the new stadium will be completed by November, stating, “Mombasa residents will have the facility because we all know how much we need such a facility, and I can assure you by November you’ll see these changes. Already some grass has been put on the field as we look forward to make it even better,” he added.
