On August 5, 2019, a dispute over the burial of Kibra MP Ken Okoth seemed insurmountable after a magistrate's court issued an order stopping the funeral plans.
However, thanks to the personal intervention of former premier Raila Odinga and Nairobi governor Mike Sonko, the parties involved were able to resolve their differences through an overnight meeting.
According to lawyers representing Okoth's family, Odinga and Sonko played key roles in brokering the truce, which allowed the funeral plans to proceed.
"Everyone sat the whole night separately but it was not until this morning that a deal was arrived at to enable us go and sign the consent in court," said Elkanah Mogaka, one of the lawyers representing Okoth's family.
As part of the agreement, a DNA test will be undertaken to confirm the paternity of Jayden Baraka Okoth, the late MP's son, and the five-year-old will be allowed to participate in the funeral arrangements.
