The long-awaited Mwai Kibaki Teaching and Referral Hospital in Nyeri County is finally complete and ready to receive patients on Tuesday, August 6, 2019.
Located in Othaya, the 350-bed capacity facility is the fourth level six hospital in the country, following Kenyatta National Hospital, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.
According to Public Service Commission Chair Stephen Kirogo, the hospital is fully operational, with all necessary installations in place, including the hiring of medical staff.
During an inspection tour, Kirogo announced that the commission had recruited 527 workers, who were inducted, marking the full operationalization of the facility.
“With the staff in place, we are happy to report that the hospital is ready to commence operations,” Kirogo said.
The hospital, which will be solely run by the national government, is expected to benefit Nyeri and neighboring counties, including Marsabit.
Area MP Gichuki Mugambi hailed the facility's operationalization as a significant step towards delivering Universal Health Care (UHC), one of the big four agenda of the national government.
