Kenya's Manvir Baryan and his British navigator Drew Sturrock took the lead in the 2019 Pearl of Africa Rally, a round of the Africa Rally Championship, in Uganda's central district of Luwero.
The rally, which kicked off on August 2, 2019, saw Baryan driving a Skoda Fabia R5 post a total time loss of three minutes and 17 seconds.
Uganda's Jas Mangat finished second, just three seconds behind Baryan, while another Ugandan, Hasan Alwi, took third place.
On Day 2 of the rally, which took place in Kayunga, another central Ugandan district, Baryan expressed his cautious approach to maintaining the lead, saying, 'We are going to be very cautious on the road as we need to get enough points and keep our lead on the ARC table.'
With 176 points, Baryan remains the favorite to claim victory on Saturday, while Zambia's Leroy Gomes trails behind with 88 points, having opted not to participate in the Ugandan rally.
Notably, Baryan has won the Pearl of Africa Rally in 2018 and 2017, while Uganda's Hassan Alwi won the event in 2016 and Kenya's Jaspreet Chatthe took the title in 2015.
