On August 5, 2019, a devastating car crash occurred in Cairo, Egypt, resulting in the loss of 19 lives.
A speeding car was driving against traffic when it collided with three other vehicles outside the National Cancer Institute in central Cairo, causing a huge explosion.
The Egyptian health ministry confirmed that 30 people were also injured in the crash, with three to four of them in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
According to Khaled Megahed, a spokesman for the health ministry, the injured suffered from 'several burns of varying degrees'.
Body parts were retrieved from the scene, and social media users shared footage of cars ablaze and patients being evacuated from the Cancer Institute.
Following the crash, Egypt's prosecutor general ordered an investigation to determine the causes of the accident.
Deadly road accidents are a common occurrence in Egypt, with over 3,000 people killed in more than 8,400 crashes in 2018, according to official figures.
