Kenya's devolved units owe contractors a staggering Sh100 billion, according to Richard Ngatia, President of the Kenya National Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
Speaking at the Kanjuu Primary School in Kirinyaga County during the region's first cultural festival on Sunday, Ngatia expressed concern over the delay in paying contractors who had been awarded tenders to construct various projects and supply items to the devolved units.
Ngatia noted that the national government had already paid its contractors, and it was now the counties' turn to follow suit. He emphasized that contractors cannot clear outstanding bank loans they obtained due to non-payment of their money by counties.
"We want all the traders to do business in an environment where they can meet their financial obligations and participate well in the growth of the economy," Ngatia said.
Ngatia also used the opportunity to promote Kenya's diverse cultures, urging Kenyans to continue embracing their cultural heritage, which he observed promotes good morals.
He promised that the Kenya National Chambers of Commerce and Industry will continue sponsoring cultural activities across the country.
