On February 10, 2011, a heinous crime shook the quiet village of Mituri in Kakamega East. Wilson Misiko Mungasi, then 28, was found guilty of raping and murdering his 79-year-old grandmother, Selina Ikambi Anasi.

Published on August 5, 2019, the court proceedings revealed that Ikambi went missing on the day of the incident, prompting a search by her family members. Misiko, who lived in the same compound, initially denied knowing her whereabouts but was later compelled to assist in the search.

After a two-hour search, Ikambi's body was found in a family sugarcane plantation, covered with a blanket and her mouth stuffed with pieces of mattress. Misiko went missing immediately after the discovery and reappeared five days later during the burial, where he was arrested.

During the trial, Misiko sought leniency, claiming he was remorseful and a first-time offender. However, Judge Jesse Njagi was unconvinced, stating that the accused had failed to participate in the search and vanished after the body was recovered.

Justice Njagi sentenced Misiko to 22 years in jail, citing the gravity of the offense and the need for a prison term to serve justice. The judge also granted Misiko 14 days to lodge an appeal.
