Members of Parliament (MPs) have a critical role in protecting public resources, and their failure to do so can have serious consequences for the country.

According to the Constitution, MPs are entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the management of public resources, including ensuring that funds are utilized efficiently and effectively.

However, a recent report by the Senate has highlighted the alarming rate at which public resources are being mismanaged, with billions of shillings being lost through faulty payments and other forms of corruption.

The report, which was tabled in the Senate on August 2, 2019, revealed that the Treasury had made payments amounting to Sh100 billion to contractors without proper verification, leading to a significant loss of public funds.

Senators have blamed accounting officers for the faulty payments, citing a lack of transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.

As the country continues to grapple with the challenges of corruption and mismanagement of public resources, it is imperative that MPs take their responsibility seriously and ensure that public funds are utilized for the benefit of the people.

By doing so, they can help to build trust and confidence in the government and its institutions, and contribute to the country's development and prosperity.
