On August 3, 2019, a mass shooting occurred at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, leaving 20 people dead and over 20 injured.
Paul Ereng, a former Kenyan athlete living in El Paso, expressed relief that no Kenyans were reported among the victims.
Speaking to the Daily Nation, Ereng, a former 800m Olympics champion, stated, "Thanks God we are safe. This is my mall. We pray and at the same time we are very sad for those who have lost life and those injured. This is a very sad day here in El Paso."

The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Patrick Crusius from Allen, Texas, surrendered to police after the shooting.
El Paso police chief Greg Allen revealed that authorities were examining a manifesto from the suspect, which indicated a potential nexus to a hate crime.
The attack was one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern US history, according to CNN.
