On August 5, 2019, the Kenya secondary and primary school second term games came to a close, showcasing a mix of new order and consistency in various disciplines.
Notably, Kaya Kiwi from the coastal region successfully defended the girls' netball title, while Wiyeta from Trans Nzoia retained the girls' soccer title. Kwanthanze from the eastern region also kept the girls' volleyball crown.
Kitale's St Anthony retained the boys' soccer title, and Laiser Hilll successfully defended the boys' basketball crown in the secondary school games. New teams emerged, including Mogonga PAG from Kisii, who won the boys' volleyball title.
As expected, Rift Valley retained both the boys and girls' volleyball titles in the primary school games. Nyanza and Coast kept the girls' netball and boys' soccer titles, respectively.
The raw talent displayed at the games was inspiring, with teams like Kaya Tiwi, St Anthony, and Kwanthanze consistently producing quality talent. To build on this momentum, it is essential to support these schools by providing good facilities and training coaches, who are often teachers.
By partnering with sports federations, schools can identify and nurture talent. Introducing Under-16 teams across disciplines might be a wise decision, but it has stretched schools' resources, necessitating assistance to help them manage their doubled budgets.
