Tanzania's Penalty Shootout Victory Sends Kenya Packing from CHAN Qualifiers ¶
Kenya's Harambee Stars were eliminated from the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers after losing to Tanzania in a penalty shootout at the Kasarani Stadium on August 4, 2019.
Coach Sebastien Migne's team had drawn 0-0 with Tanzania in the first leg in Dar es Salaam, but ultimately fell short in the return leg, losing 4-1 in the penalty shootout.
Kenya's players, including Samuel Onyango and Duke Abuya, showed flashes of their threat, but ultimately failed to capitalize on their pace and possession.
Joash Onyango stood out in the opening proceedings, marshaling the Kenyan defense and neutralizing the danger of Tanzania's Jonas Mkudde.
However, Tanzania's Gabriel Kamagi showed no nerves from the spot, beating John Oyemba to give his team the advantage.
Kenya's Mike Kibwage and Joash Onyango missed their penalties, while Aiyee Hamis struck the decisive penalty to win it for Tanzania.
The Taifa Stars had a good start from the penalty, with Jonas Mkudde slotting the opener before goalkeeper Juma Kaseja dived to keep out Kibwage's effort.
Paulo Nyanganya beat John Oyemba to ensure Tanzania stayed in front, and Clifton Miheso expertly planted his effort into the left corner to give Kenya a fighting chance.
