On August 3, 2019, a gunman's deadly rampage at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas left 20 people dead and many more injured. Fortunately, according to former 800m Olympics champion Paul Ereng, all Kenyans he knows in the area are safe.
Ereng, a resident of El Paso, stated that the store is a frequent haunt for many Kenyans living in Texas.
"Thanks God we are safe. This is my mall. We pray and at the same time we are very sad for those who have lost life and those injured. This is a very sad day here in El Paso," Ereng told Daily Nation Sports Editor Elias Makori by phone.
Track champions James Saruni and Emmanuel Korir, who are Ereng's charges at UTEP, are also safe. Ereng revealed that they usually shop at the mall where the shooting took place.
The suspect in the deadly shootings, Patrick Crusius, 21, of Allen, Texas, was taken into custody after surrendering to the police outside the Walmart.
