On August 5, 2019, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Women's Tour commenced at Peponi School in Kenya, featuring 35 players from 15 countries.
Kenya's top-ranked players, Angela Okutoyi, Faith Nyabera, and Judith Nkatha, secured byes to the main draw, which included 24 players.
Among the 11 players competing in the qualifying round were Shania Gadhia, Roselida Asumwa, and Alicia Owegi, all from Kenya.
ITF supervisor Patrick Kamuhia stated that the main draw would be determined at the end of the qualifying round.
"We are ready for the event despite several withdrawals from Russia, Nigeria, Poland, the United Kingdom, the USA, and Venezuela," Kamuhia said.
On the first day of the tournament, Owegi faced Julia Konishi Camargo Silva from Brazil at 11am, while Asumwa faced India's Prasad Deeka Manju at 2pm. Gadhia was pitted against another Indian player, Vibhasree Gowda, also at 2pm.
