On August 4, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko made headlines after allegedly forcing a chef and a manager at a Nakuru hotel to taste his breakfast before he could eat it.
According to eyewitnesses, Sonko ordered breakfast after spending the night at the four-star hotel, which was temporarily disrupted by his motorcade.
"The hotel chef and manager had to take two mouthfuls in front of him before to confirm the food was safe," a hotel customer who witnessed the incident told The Standard.
Sonko's motorcade, which included a Mercedes Benz, two Landcruiser V8s, a Lexus LX 570, and a Nissan Patrol Platinum V8, among others, caused a stir at the hotel.
"Why does he have to travel with a fire engine in tow? This man is enjoying life. I hope these are not taxpayers' money," a client at the hotel told The Standard.
Before the incident, Sonko had addressed residents in Nakuru as part of his visit to attend the National Music Festivals.
"A stopover in Nakuru town advocating matters Wanjiku and the Big Four Agenda. We as leaders must always address issues affecting the common mwananchi. Doing so is taking development to the doorsteps of Adhiambo, Wanjiku, Nzioka, Wafula and the less fortunate in the society," Sonko tweeted.
