On Sunday, August 4, 2019, Telkom, the defending champions, humbled Sliders 6-1 in a Kenya Hockey Union women's Premier League match, extending their lead at the summit of the league as the first half season closes.
Maureen Okumu and Jackie Mwangi scored a brace each for Telkom, while Terry Juma and Barbara Simiyu added a goal apiece. Sliders' consolation goal came courtesy of Noella Makena.
Coach Jos Openda's return to the team was a significant factor in their victory. Openda had called time on his career earlier in the year but made a shock comeback to lead the team.
His return saw the team return to their scoring spree, having struggled this season compared to previous seasons. Openda attributed his return to the team's withdrawal of sponsorship, stating, "Most people viewed me as the face of Telkom, and it pained me when the team lost sponsorship. I am here to see how we can get another sponsor on board."
Telkom finished the first half of the season unbeaten, with five wins and two draws, accumulating 18 points, four points ahead of United States International University-Africa (USIU-A), who are second on the log with 14 points.
