Ken Okoth's Widow Faces Traditional Rites After His Burial ¶
Ken Okoth, the former Kibra Member of Parliament, was buried on August 3, 2019, in a cremation site in Kariokor, Nairobi. However, the burial has sparked controversy among the Luo community, with some elders insisting that traditional rites must be performed.
According to the Luo culture, Monica Okoth, Ken's widow, may be required to undergo a ritual where she is ritually cleansed and possibly inherited by one of Ken's brothers.
Speaking on August 4, 2019, the chairman of the Luo elders, Nyandiko Ongadi, emphasized that Monica must participate in the traditional rites, which include being ritually cleansed and possibly inheriting her husband's property.
Monica Okoth, who is currently in France, may not be aware of the Luo customs and traditions. The elders have asked her to return to Kenya and participate in the traditional rites.
However, the family's decision to cremate Ken's body has been met with opposition from some members of the Luo community, who argue that it goes against their cultural beliefs.
