On Friday, President Kenyatta announced plans to build additional chemotherapy and radiology centers in various regions of the country, a move that has been met with skepticism by Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o.
Speaking during the funeral service of the late Bomet Governor Dr. Joyce Laboso, who succumbed to colon cancer in Nairobi Hospital, Nyong'o expressed concerns that the government's plan would be futile without a focus on developing human resources.
According to Nyong'o, who has personal experience with cancer after being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010, the country needs to prioritize research, education, and specialization in cancer treatment.
"We seem to be laying a lot of emphasis on building cancer centers," Nyong'o said. "What is important about cancer is getting people who are specialized in the different types of cancer."
He emphasized that building cancer centers without trained specialists and functional research centers would be pointless, citing his own experience of receiving treatment in the United States.
