On August 3, 2019, a gunman opened fire at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, killing 20 people and wounding 26 others in the latest mass shooting in the US.
President Donald Trump condemned the attack as 'an act of cowardice' and called for an end to the 'epidemic' of gun violence.
Police chief Greg Allen confirmed that the gunman, identified as 21-year-old Patrick Crusius from Allen, Texas, was taken into custody after surrendering to police about a block away from the Walmart.
Crusius was wearing a black T-shirt, combat trousers, and ear muffs when he opened fire around 10:30 am, shooting at random and killing people who crossed his path.
Witnesses described the scene as 'chaotic' and 'terrifying', with people running out of the store as gunfire echoed.
One witness, Vanessa, said she had just pulled into the Walmart parking lot when the shooting began and saw a woman fall to the ground with her groceries in her cart.
Another witness, Robert Curado, said he managed to avoid being hit by hiding with his mother between two vending machines just outside the store.
Video captured by a witness in the parking lot showed three people lying motionless on the ground, with one person crying out for help.
Trump, who was spending the weekend at his golf club in New Jersey, said the shooting was 'not only tragic, it was an act of cowardice' and called for an end to the 'epidemic' of gun violence.
