Published on August 4, 2019, Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has pledged to secure the release of over 2,000 Kiambu youth who are currently in jail due to their inability to raise bail.
During his two-day stay at Industrial Area Remand Prison, where he was detained after failing to deposit Sh15 million cash bail, Governor Waititu met the youth and witnessed firsthand the harsh conditions they were facing.
"I saw our people being eaten by lice and bedbugs over petty offenses and I have decided to make sure they are released from the prison," Waititu said.
He added that it was God's grace that led him to the prison, where he saw the unbearable situation and felt compelled to act.
Despite being barred from accessing his office by Milimani Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi until his graft case is heard and determined, Governor Waititu remains committed to performing his duties, including overseeing the construction of Wangige Level Four Hospital and Kikuyu market.
