On Saturday, August 4, 2019, Equity Hawks reinforced their dominance in the Kenya Basketball Federation league by securing a crushing 59-42 victory over struggling Eagle Wings at Nyayo Stadium Gymnasium.
The reigning champions, Equity Hawks, now hold a commanding 31-point lead at the top of the table, having won 15 matches out of a possible 16. Their sole defeat came at the hands of ex-champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).
Salma Akinyi and Linda Alando led the charge for Hawks in the first period, combining for 10 points to give their team a 19-9 lead. However, Eagle Wings fought back in the second period, with Eunice Ouma pouring in 9 points to narrow the gap to 23-21 at halftime.
Despite Eunice Ouma's game-high 16 points, it was not enough to propel Eagle Wings to victory. Betty Kananu and Belinda Okoth combined for 20 points in the third and fourth quarters to seal the win for Hawks.
Meanwhile, in another match, Clara Rotich scored a game-high 15 points to lead Strathmore Swords to a 60-43 rout of Africa Nazarene University (ANU) in a highly intense varsity derby at the same venue.
Strathmore Swords took an early lead, handing ANU a crushing 3-20 rout in the opening quarter. However, ANU fought back in the second quarter, taking a 21-9 lead to set the halftime score at 24-29.
Despite a strong comeback, ANU ultimately fell short, with Susan Manya and Neema Achieng scoring 11 and 12 points respectively for Swords, while Caroline Njeri led ANU with 15 points.
Strathmore Swords bounced back from their previous loss to Varsity foils Zetech, securing a crucial win to stay in contention for the top spot.
