On August 2, 2019, Kenyans gathered to bid farewell to the late Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso, and it was a celebration of her life and love story with her husband, Dr. Edwin Abonyo.
President Uhuru Kenyatta attended the service and praised Dr. Abonyo, calling him the 'best speaker' of the day.
Dr. Abonyo took to the podium to reminisce about his days with Joyce, from their campus days to her fight with cancer and her political career.
He thanked their drivers for standing by the family through tough times and described Joyce as a caring mother and non-tribal woman who judged people based on their character, not their origin or surname.
Dr. Abonyo also shared a personal anecdote about how he and Joyce agreed to drop his name in 2008 to enable her to contest the Sotik parliamentary seat, which she won twice before seeking the gubernatorial position.
Other speakers, including Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru and Judy, Joyce's sister-in-law, echoed the sentiments, praising Dr. Abonyo for being a 'husband sent from heaven.'
