On August 3, 2019, Tanzania President John Magufuli made good on his promise to gift Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta with four peacocks during the Kenyan president's private visit to Magufuli's rural home in Chato.
The ornamental birds were delivered to State House, Nairobi by Tanzania High Commissioner to Kenya Dr. Pindi Chana.
Receiving the gift, President Kenyatta expressed his gratitude, saying, "On my own behalf and on behalf of the people of Kenya, I receive this special gift. This is in the spirit of brotherhood and friendship of the East African residents."
He added, "It's a great honor not only between us as Presidents but as the people of East Africa. This deep relationship and brotherhood should continue so as to benefit our current and future generations."
President Magufuli had previously stated that Kenyatta was the first visiting leader to ever receive such a gift from Tanzania, citing the historical significance of the peacocks in their country.
