On August 3, 2019, women leaders from across the country gathered at the burial ceremony of the late Governor Dr. Joyce Laboso in Fort Tenan, Kisumu County. The ceremony was attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto, and several governors, senators, and MPs.
During the ceremony, Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu and Kirinyaga Governor Anne Mumbi called on the incoming governor of Bomet, Hillary Barchok, to choose a female deputy in honor of Dr. Laboso. They stated that they would be ready to help the new governor choose among the many educated and qualified women in Bomet to be his deputy.
Ngilu emphasized, 'We are watching the seat very closely, and we are ready to advise, to guide and even to help you choose a woman from Bomet as your deputy.' The women praised Dr. Laboso as an exemplary leader who was passionate about girl child education.
Dr. Laboso served as the Sotik MP from 2008 to 2017 before clinching the Bomet Governor seat. She succumbed to cancer on July 29 at Nairobi Hospital.
