On Saturday, August 3, 2019, Nyakach Girls High School made history by winning the girls' Under-19 football title at the National Secondary Schools Term Two Games, held at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu.
The team's 2-0 victory over Rift Valley Region's Itigo Girls High School marked their maiden crown and a sweet revenge after Itigo had beaten them in the preliminaries.
Nyakach midfielder Faith Omuyaka opened the scoring goal in the 42nd minute, dribbling past two Itigo defenders. Left winger Lanoline Aoko doubled her team's advantage in the 85th minute, finishing off a wonderful cross from Provedence Khasiala.
According to Nyakach captain Mary Akumu, the team's win was a result of good coordination and a change in formation, which allowed them to outwit Itigo's unique game style.
Nyakach head coach Chrispine Odindo attributed their success to the change in the line-up and his players' discipline, as well as the advantage of playing at Moi Stadium, where they had trained and competed in regional finals.
The top three finishers, including Archbishop Njenga, who finished third with a 7-1 rout of Njabini Girls High School, will represent Kenya in the East Africa Secondary School Games in Arusha, Tanzania later this month.
Kenya will be defending the girls' football crown won by Kwale Girls High School in Musanze, Rwanda last year.
