August 3, 2019 - Matatu operators in Rift Valley Region are facing a growing threat from organized gangs that are terrorizing the industry.
According to Central Rift Matatu Owners Association Chairman David Kuria, the gangs have taken over the management of bus terminus in the region and are extorting money from drivers.
The gangs, which have been linked to former employees of matatu Saccos who were fired for indiscipline or other reasons, are also stealing from passengers and threatening drivers.
Kuria estimates that the gangs are making an estimated Ksh 50 million per month from protection fees, which are illegal.
However, Nakuru East Deputy Sub County Police Commander Daniel Gitavi has assured the operators that detectives have stepped up their crackdown against the gang members.
Gitavi urged the operators to support the police in identifying the gang members and promised increased police presence in bus terminus.
