On August 3, 2019, Tanzania's Julius Nyerere International Airport unveiled a new terminal, marking a significant milestone in the country's efforts to establish itself as a major aviation hub in the region.

The $282 million facility, which can handle up to six million passengers annually, was officially opened by President John Magufuli. The president emphasized the importance of maintaining the terminal's high standards, stating that it was a reflection of the country's image for foreign visitors.

According to Tanzania's Transport Minister Isaack Kamwelwe, the new terminal will also enable increased freight volumes, resulting in higher revenue collection.

Julius Nyerere International Airport is the largest of Tanzania's three international airports, with the others being Kilimanjaro International Airport in the north and Zanzibar International Airport.

As part of a broader plan to revamp the country's aviation sector, a modernisation programme is underway for at least three more airports – Dodoma, Songwe, and Chato.

Recently, Air Tanzania relaunched long-haul flights to Mumbai, India, marking the airline's entry into the Asian market. The airline plans to introduce flights to London, Lagos, and Accra, in addition to its existing domestic and international routes.
