On August 3, 2019, a group of human rights activists from Garissa presented a petition to the county assembly, calling for an investigation into alleged corruption within the executive arm.
The group, led by Hassan Gumo, claims they have decided to take the move after the governor failed to address their issues, including public participation in key decisions and gross misappropriation of funds.
According to the petition, there is rampant corruption and lack of transparency and accountability in the county, with the administration deliberately disregarding the issue.
Gumo dismissed allegations that the group is being used to malign the county, stating that they are speaking for the voiceless in society.
