On a mission to enhance the quality of higher education in Kenya, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has directed the Commission for University Education (CUE) to prepare a report on the status of university education in the country.
Speaking at a high education conference, Magoha emphasized the need for universities to offer specialized courses that are relevant and beneficial to the country's development. He questioned the need for duplicating courses, stating, "Why do you have to duplicate courses? Where this university is doing law, the other is doing the same. We cannot establish new universities that will only duplicate courses offered in existing ones,"
Magoha's directive comes at a time when the country has over 70 universities, with many not offering specialized courses. The establishment of new universities has been put on hold for the last two years, and Magoha has announced that this freeze will continue to be enforced.
Furthermore, Magoha has instructed the CUE to investigate the quality of PhDs being offered in universities, with a view to enhancing the overall quality of higher education in the country.
Magoha's efforts are aimed at addressing the quality of higher education in Kenya, and his directives are expected to have a significant impact on the country's university education system.
