Published on August 3, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta has promised to strengthen government efforts to combat cancer in Kenya.
Speaking at a Cabinet meeting, Kenyatta emphasized the need for collective action to prevent and treat cancer, highlighting the importance of collaboration between the national and county governments.
"We need to see what more we can do to assist both in prevention but also in the treatment of the disease. And we need to do that as a Government together with the county governments," Kenyatta said.
According to Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki, cancer is the third leading cause of death in Kenya, accounting for seven percent of total deaths. The disease claims the lives of 32,987 people annually, with 47,887 new cases recorded each year.
