On August 2, 2019, Kenyan gospel singer Kennedy Liech, whose real name is Kennedy Liech, made headlines with his new single 'Naflash Shetani Kama Pupu'. The song's lyrics have been criticized for being explicit and provocative.
According to Liech, the song is inspired by the Bible and is meant to convey a message about the devil and the power of faith. In an interview, he stated, 'I did this song to show people that the devil is a liar and in the book Luke 10:19 God has given us the authority to trade over the devil. I'm exercising my right. I don't want to sugar coat anything. I'm calling a spade a spade.'
Liech also criticized current ministers for preaching a 'gospel of prosperity' and not speaking the truth. He said, 'Current ministers are preaching the gospel of prosperity all the time. They are preaching what people only want to hear. I'm not a pleaser of men. Pupu is something disgusting so because the devil is disgusting we are flashing him away.'
When asked if the song was a publicity stunt, Liech denied it, saying, 'No. this is not a stunt so that I hit the headlines or something like that. I just want people to get it straight and direct. No matter what people think of me, my conscious is clear.'
The song has sparked a debate among Christians, with some criticizing Liech for his explicit lyrics and others defending his right to express himself. Another Kenyan artiste has previously released a song, 'Yesu Nipe Nyonyo', which also faced criticism from fire-breathing Christians.
