On October 20, 2017, a heinous crime was committed in Jerunya Area, Langas, within Uasin Gishu County. A 10-year-old girl was defiled by a neighbour, Josphat Murule, alias Tall man, who was a 39-year-old ex-police officer at the time.
According to the court, Murule called the girl while she was playing with her friends and asked her to sweep his house. He then took advantage of her, committing an indecent act with a child. The girl testified that Murule threatened her not to tell anyone about the incident.
A P3 form issued at the Langas police station and filled by a doctor at the hospital was provided as evidence in court. The prosecution relied on the complainant's testimony, saying she could identify the perpetrator who was well known.
Murule denied the allegations, claiming he was at work on the said date and only got arrested two days later after officers claimed he had defiled a neighbour's child. However, a probation report presented in court showed that Murule was an ex-police officer who was sacked and had two wives who left him because of alcoholism and his violent nature.
Principal Magistrate Naomi Wairimu found Murule guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The court also found him guilty of committing an indecent act with a child.
