Travelers to certain countries are often required to show proof of yellow fever vaccination. But what happens when you're unable to receive the vaccine?
According to Dr. Aisha Abubakar, Mombasa's chief officer for public health, vaccination requirements vary from country to country. For instance, India and Pakistan require proof of polio vaccination, while Tanzania does not have such a requirement. However, most countries ask for a yellow fever vaccination card.
Since the yellow fever vaccine is a live vaccine, some individuals may be unable to receive it due to low immunity. In such cases, a doctor's exemption letter may be issued, allowing the individual to travel without the vaccine. However, some countries may not honor this exemption, and it's essential to check the specific requirements of your destination.
Even if you're unable to receive the vaccine, there are steps you can take to minimize your risk of contracting yellow fever. When traveling to areas with a risk of yellow fever transmission, avoid staying outdoors at night when mosquitoes are most active. Wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts and pants, and opt for air-conditioned or well-ventilated rooms to reduce your exposure to mosquitoes.
It's also essential to note that the yellow fever vaccine is valid for life, and you only need to get it 10 days before traveling. This is a significant change from the previous requirement of repeating the vaccine every 10 years.
