On August 2, 2019, a section of Kibra residents expressed their opposition to the cremation plan for the late Ken Okoth, the area's Member of Parliament.
The residents argued that cremation is against Luo culture and customs, and doing so would be a taboo. They claimed that Okoth's siblings would seek God's guidance even after his death.
According to Nick Odhiambo, the residents were not consulted on whether to have the MP buried or cremated.
"As Kibra youths, we shall not allow this to happen. Okoth is a Luo, and Luo culture states clearly that the body of the dead must be buried," Odhiambo said.
The residents also slammed Okoth's wife for vouching for the cremation plan, urging her to be bound by Luo culture and traditions.
Other unconfirmed reports suggested that Okoth's mother had threatened not to attend the cremation ceremony, saying the wife had surpassed her opinion.
