On August 2, 2019, Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu was ordered by the courts to stay away from his office in Kiambu. The governor and his wife, Susan Ndung'u, had been released from prison after posting bail of Sh19 million, with Waititu paying Sh15 million and his wife paying Sh4 million.
Waititu is now expecting the courts to reduce his bail terms and lift some of the orders, including the one that bars him from his office. The governor and his wife, along with senior Kiambu County officials, have been charged with irregular tender worth Sh588 million.
Two other accused persons, Luka Mwangi and Charles Chege, are still at the Industrial Area Remand prison, having been unable to meet their bail conditions.
Meanwhile, a power struggle is brewing in the county, with allies of Deputy Governor James Nyoro at odds with those of Waititu over the running of county affairs. Deputy Governor Nyoro has been chairing Cabinet meetings, but some officials claim these meetings do not qualify as official Cabinet meetings.
"The meetings that the acting governor has been chairing do not qualify to be called official Cabinet meetings," said Youth Affairs, Sport and Communication Affairs Karungo Thangw'a.
