On August 1, 2019, Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu walked out of the Industrial Area Prison in Nairobi, marking the end of his four-night stay.
Waititu's release came after he paid his Sh15 million bail, a significant amount that was likely a challenge for the embattled governor.
His freedom was short-lived, however, as he was charged with corruption over Sh588 million irregular road tenders.
Waititu's release also coincided with the takeover of the Kiambu county leadership by his deputy, James Nyoro, who had promised to fill the power vacuum left by his predecessor.
