On Wednesday, Manyatta Member of Parliament John Muchiri delivered a 52-seater bus to St Benedict Day Secondary School – Kithimu in his constituency. The gesture, intended to benefit the students, has instead earned him sharp criticism.
According to pictures shared by the legislator, the students and parents of the school were overjoyed upon receiving the brand new school bus. However, the joy was short-lived as the MP's decision to brand the bus with his picture and name sparked controversy.
The rear window of the bus features a huge portrait of the MP with the inscription 'Sponsored by Hon. John Muchiri HSC.' Kenyans on social media have taken offense with the MP's self-promotion, forcing him to apologize and explain himself.
Mr. Muchiri claimed that the branding was only for the handing over ceremony and the stickers were later removed. He apologized for any offense caused and stated that he has five more buses to issue out to Day Secondary Schools, which will also feature the project identification graphics.
His apology came after he faced criticism for his actions, with many accusing him of self-promotion. The incident has sparked a debate on the use of public funds and the role of politicians in community development projects.
