On August 2, 2019, MCAs in Taita-Taveta County made a unanimous decision to award themselves house allowances.

The MCAs argued that they were acting in accordance with a resolution by the Governing Council of the County Assemblies Forum, a lobby for MCAs across the country.

According to the motion, the implementation of the house allowance payment should commence immediately.

House Speaker Meshack Maganga defended the MCAs' decision, stating that SRC's approval was the only requirement needed for the implementation of the house allowance.

Maganga argued that governors, their deputies, county executive committee members, and county chief officers all receive house allowances, and that it was time for MCAs to benefit as well.
