On Thursday morning, Mary Aoko, a 67-year-old woman, jumped into Lake Victoria at Wath-K'Opondo beach in Bondo sub-county, where she drowned and died.
According to Central Yimbo Chief Gordon Opundo, Aoko had left her husband at home on Thursday night and walked to the beach without disclosing her destination.
Opundo confirmed the incident to The Standard, stating that Aoko's phone and clothes were found on the lakeshore by some fishermen, who then raised an alarm.
Members of the public joined the search and eventually found Aoko's body stuck in a fishing net a few meters from the lakeshore.
The body was taken to Bondo sub-county hospital mortuary for a postmortem, as investigations into the incident began.
Chief Opundo used the opportunity to advise the public to seek alternative solutions to their problems, rather than resorting to suicide.
“There are alternative ways of solving problems and sharing the problems with people close to you for assistance can help avert such untimely deaths,” he advised.
