August 1, 2019, marked the day when a fake bill, labeled Milk Bill 2019, began circulating on social media, claiming to regulate Kenya's milk industry.

The bill, which was later revealed to be a fabrication, proposed that farmers would not be allowed to directly sell fresh milk to their neighbors. Instead, they would have to pasteurize and package their product before selling it to their neighbors.

Other outrageous proposals in the fake bill included prohibiting farmers from selling milk to hawkers and requiring payments to be made based on milk quality, not quantity.

However, the Clerk of the National Assembly, Michael Sialal, quickly dismissed the document, stating that such a bill was neither proposed nor tabled before the National Assembly.

"There is no such bill either proposed or tabled before parliament for debate by legislatures. The authors of this information are hereby warned to abstain from circulating malicious falsehoods to the public with intention of causing panic," he said.

With the fake bill now debunked, Kenyans can rest assured that their milk industry remains unaffected by these baseless proposals.
