On August 1, 2019, Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu and his wife Susan Wangari Ndung'u, along with six other individuals, secured their release on bond after facing fraud charges over irregular tenders worth Sh588 million.
Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi directed the accused to deposit varying amounts of money in court to secure their release. Mr. Waititu, along with Luka Mwangi and Joyce Musyoka, was required to deposit Sh15 million each, while Mrs. Ndung'u was directed to deposit Sh4 million.
The court also granted the accused an alternative bond of Sh30 million. However, the prosecution did request that Mr. Waititu be barred from accessing the County offices, a request that was granted by the court.
Mr. Waititu has since filed a review of the bail terms before the High Court, which is set to be heard on the same day.
The charges against the accused include knowingly acquiring an indirect private interest in contracts awarded to Testimony Enterprises Ltd by the Kiambu County government, as well as making irregular payments between July 2, 2018, and March 13, 2019.
