On August 1, 2019, the Coast and Nyanza regions made history by claiming the Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association football championships at Meru Teachers Training College in Meru County.
Coast, despite facing a worrying challenge with their first-choice goalkeeper Salim Magaro and defender Abdalla Joto injured, managed to hold off a physical Nairobi side and win 3-2 on penalties after both teams tied 1-1 after extra time.
Nairobi drew the first blood through Dibon Otieno, who scored a goal past Magaro on 25 minutes. However, the goalkeeper was replaced by Juma Mlai, and Coast equalized just three minutes later.
Coach Mzungu Mwanzala expressed hope that the injured players would recover in time to compete in the East African Games.
Meanwhile, in the girls' final, Nyanza defeated their Western arch-rivals 5-4 on post-match penalties to lift this year's national trophy after battling to a 1-1 draw after extra time.
Goalkeeper Pamela Awuor was the heroine, blocking the crucial penalty struck by Western custodian Cynthia Cheruto, and helping her team book a ticket to the East African championships later that month.
Nairobi goalkeeper Woche Dulla was voted the best, while his teammate Dibon Otieno won the Golden Boot.
