Nairobi, August 1, 2019 - Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso's courageous battle against cancer has come to an end, leaving behind a legacy of strength and resilience.
According to her widower, Dr Edwin Abonyo, Joyce was first diagnosed with cancer 28 years ago, and the disease recurred several times before her passing.
Dr Abonyo shared a poignant eulogy at the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi, recalling the early days of their marriage and how the reality of cancer hit him hard.
'We had just begun to do things, you know, two young people, running around and not sure whether our families really love us or appreciate us,' he said, 'they probably think our marriage is going to fail, then comes the disease.'
Dr Abonyo recounted how Joyce's determination to live a normal life despite her illness inspired him and their children.
'Most of you would not have known unless you were her friend, that Joyce had a lot of problems,' he said. 'My children first knew when they were 20. She did not like drama or a situation where you are sympathising with her or lie down in bed because she is sick, that was not Joyce.'
The memorial service was attended by Deputy President William Ruto, Cabinet Secretaries, MPs, and several governors, who paid tribute to Laboso's remarkable life and legacy.
