Published on August 1, 2019, the European Union expressed regret over the US decision to impose sanctions on Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

The move is the latest in a series of actions by President Donald Trump aimed at undermining the 2015 international deal to curb Iran's nuclear programme.

Carlos Martin Ruiz De Gordejuela, a spokesman for EU diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini, stated, "We regret this decision."

Despite the US sanctions, the EU has vowed to maintain diplomatic channels with Zarif, who has been at the forefront of complex talks with foreign capitals over Iran's nuclear power industry.

The EU's decision to defy US sanctions is a significant blow to President Trump's efforts to isolate Iran diplomatically.
